What is the Single Crochet (US) Spike Stitch?

In crochet, a single crochet spike (Ssc) stitch involves inserting the hook into a stitch (or space) from a previous row or round, rather than into the top loops of the current row or round, creating a vertical stitch that extends down from the fabric. This technique is commonly used to add texture and visual interest to crochet projects, creating a raised or textured effect within the fabric.

How to Make a Single Crochet (US) Spike Stitch

After identifying the desired stitch (or space), the hook is inserted, yarn over is pulled through, and a loop is drawn up to the level of the current row or round. Finally, the single crochet stitch is completed as usual. The hook can be inserted into a stitch (or space) one or more rows or rounds below and can even be a few stitches to the right or left; there are so many design possibilities! In this tutorial we are going to learn how to make a simple single crochet spike stitch into the row and stitch directly below.
