About this Free Floral Granny Square Pattern

First published in 2020 on Ravelry and also available as a premium downloadable PDF with all speciality stitch tutorials included on Etsy.

I originally designed this floral afghan square pattern for a commissioned artwork. I live on the beautiful Coffs Coast in New South Wales, Australia, and I was asked by our local Council to create a tree wrap for a town centre yarnbombing event. The goal was to create some colourful fibre joy in these crazy covid times, and hopefully bring a smile to some faces. I loved the idea, and the theme: Spring! 🌸

I must have made this square at least 60 times now, and never the same colours twice; I encourage you to use the colours that bring you most joy in the moment 😍

The finished granny square using recommended DK (no. 3 weight) yarn and hook size 4mm/G measures 8.5 inches / 22cm

Since 2021, I’ve been including stitch photo tutorials in all the crochet patterns I sell on Etsy and Ravelry. You can now access those very same handy tutorials by clicking the links in the Specialty Stitches section below. So you don’t need to Google if you don’t know a specialty stitch; you can just get straight to hooking 🙂

A premium downloadable PDF version of this pattern is available in my Etsy and Ravelry shops. The premium version includes all the speciality stitch tutorials in addition to the full pattern instructions and additional photos.

Materials – Yarn

  • Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/8 (100% Cotton, 83yds/75m,1.75oz/50g) or any 100% cotton worsted/DK (no. 3 weight) yarn
  • I have also made this square multiple times in different cottons that are Aran weight (10ply, #4) such as Paintbox Cotton Aran and Scheepjes Cahlista, both of which are just lovely yarns that are available in a huge range of vibrant colours – you know me and colour!🌈🌈😍 – use a 4.5 to 5.5mm hook. Just bear in mind of course that your square will come out a little larger than 8.5 inches. This pattern is super versatile as regards size as you will see – just add or remove a round of granny stitch!
