About Anna’s Mandala

Anna’s Mandala was first published by Australian subscription box service Crate Crochet in 2022. The rights to this pattern have since returned to Best Crochet Life and I am delighted to share it with you here!

Anna’s Mandala was originally a commision piece for a client and while the design is exactly the same in this post, the pattern format is now my own and I have also included additional photos and used different yarns.

Anna’s Mandala is an intermediate level free crochet mandala pattern that includes a number of specialty stitches and techniques. Since 2021, I’ve been including stitch photo tutorials in all the crochet patterns I sell on Etsy and Ravelry. You can now access those very same handy tutorials by clicking the links in the Specialty Stitches section below. So you don’t need to Google if you don’t know a specialty stitch; you can just get straight to hooking 🙂

A premium downloadable PDF version of this pattern is available in my Etsy and Ravelry shops. The premium version includes all the speciality stitch tutorials in addition to the full pattern instructions and additional photos.

Materials

  • I’ve used oddments of Scheepjes Cahlista (Number 4 weight Aran yarn, 100% Cotton, 93yds/85m,1.7 oz/50g) approx. 50g in total from my stash box of leftovers with no ball bands so I’m afraid I can’t specify the exact colours used in this tutorial. As always, I just urge you to choose the shades that bring you most joy in the moment of making 😊🌈
  • 4.5mm/7 crochet hook; I only use Clover Amours or Tulip Etimos
  • I have also made this mandala in DK weight with a 4mm hook – Paintbox Cotton DK is my current number 3 weight fave – it works perfectly, just remember it’ll turn out a little smaller! The subscription box provided Texyarns Fibra Natura DK weight organic cotton and they turned out great (image below). I also recommend Yarn and Colours Epic (another Aran weight) with a 5mm hook – beautiful stuff! I urge you to experiment with different weights and colours. Let me know what you choose!
  • Optional hoop – many people love fix their mandalas to a hoop! Depending on your yarn and hook choices and your tension, I suggest holding off on choosing your hoop size until almost finished – at which point you can simply crochet your final round over your hoop 🙂
  • Yarn needle; I prefer a bent tip
  • Scissors

Gauge

Gauge is not important. Finished crochet mandala using recommended yarn Scheepjes Cahlista and a 4.5mm hook measures 7.5″ (19 cm)

Stitch Key (US terms)

  • yo = yarn over
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • sl st = slip stitch
