About This Mini Happy Basket
This is an intermediate level free small crochet basket pattern that includes a number of specialty stitches and techniques. Since 2021, I’ve been including stitch photo tutorials in all the crochet patterns I sell on Etsy and Ravelry. You can now access those very same handy tutorials by clicking the links in the Specialty Stitches section below. So you don’t need to Google if you don’t know a specialty stitch; you can just get straight to hooking 🙂
A paid version of this pattern in PDF format is also available on Etsy and Ravelry. The ad free, printable PDF includes all the stitch photo tutorials so you don’t have to click through to links.

Materials
- I’ve used oddments of Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/8 (83yds/75m, 1.75oz/50g) in seven colours but you can use any equivalent weight (DK #3) 100% cotton yarn e.g. Paintbox Cotton DK. Choose the shades that bring you most joy! For my rainbow version I have used the following colours:
- Colour A – Dusty Purple 68
- Colour B – Blue Sky 70
- Colour C – Mint 24
- Colour D – Egg Yolk 90
- Colour E – Orange 57
- Colour F – Red 58
- 3mm/D crochet hook; I only use Clover Amours or Tulip Etimos
- Yarn needle; I prefer a bent tip
- Scissors
Gauge
Gauge is not important. Finished small crochet basket size using recommended yarn and hook: 9cm base x 4.5cm height
Stitch Key (US terms)
- yo = yarn over
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- sl st = slip stitch
- sk st = skip stitch
- ch = chain
- ch-sp(s) = chain space(s)
- sc = single crochet
- tr = treble crochet
Specialty Stitches
- Adjustable Loop (or ch4, join with sl st to form loop)
- Invisible slip stitch join
- Invisible join for finishing
- BLO = crochet in the back loop only of the indicated stitch
- FLO = crochet in the front loop only of the indicated stitch
- BLOsc spike = single crochet spike stitch in the back loop only
Notes
- Experience Level: Intermediate
- Regular slip stitch joins may be used throughout, but invisible joins for finishing and invisible slip stitch joins are recommended where indicated for best results, especially in terms of colour changes
- Please note that if recommended hook and yarn (or equivalent 100% cotton) are not used, results will not be the same e.g. acrylic yarn will not maintain adequate rigidity or stitch pattern definition
