What is a Popcorn Stitch?
In crochet, a popcorn stitch is a textured stitch that creates a raised, rounded motif on the fabric. This stitch is commonly used to add dimension and visual interest to crochet projects, serving as a decorative element or forming patterns within the fabric, as illustrated by the Hexie Splash Mandala:
How to Crochet a Popcorn Stitch
Popcorn stitch involves making a set number of stitches – usually, but not always, (US) double crochets – in the same stitch or space, then removing the hook from the working loop and inserting it from front to back through the first stitch of the group. The loop is then pulled through this stitch, and it is closed with one chain stitch, forming a raised “popcorn” shape. In this tutorial example, we are going to learn how to crochet popcorn stitch using five double crochet stitches. You may also make popcorns using (US) treble stitches in sets of 3 or more.
Simply follow the written steps and the images will keep you right! Click or tap on the top right corner of any image to enlarge it if you need to. Popcorn stitches are fun; you’ve got this!
5 dc (US) Popcorn Stitch Photo Tutorials
Sometimes a pattern may ask you to begin a round or row with a popcorn stitch, in which case you need to make a ‘beginning popcorn’ that starts with 3 chain stitches (counts as the first double crochet).
Alternatively, you may choose to make your ‘beginning popcorn’ using the standing stitch method instead of chaining 3, which results in a much cleaner look.
The photographs below illustate the making of a popcorn stitch from beginning to end, using the standing stitch method to create your first dc. If you choose to chain start instead, simply insert your hook into the third chain of the starting chain.
And once you’re up and running, you can popcorn on to you heart’s content wherever you like! :
